Alan Chan turns idea into painted object by treating the canvas as a stage.

In my work, painting surface is treated as container — a stage, a playground of flatness and painterly language. Idea is turned into painted object. This transition is the struggle between movement and stillness. When emotion finds expression in language, all that is emotive is tied down by structures. It is a struggle of signification as temporal movement is frozen on the static flat surface of painting, awaiting to be re-activated, re-read and re-played through seeing.

Alan Chan studied a BA (Fine Art) at Slade School of Fine Art, and is currently studying a Master of Art (Painting) at the Royal College of Art.
