Code of Ethics

Undercoat Community Obligations

1. At all times, the Undercoat Community and Overcoat Magazine strives to comply with the Media Alliance codes of ethics (see below). Any breach of ethics will be corrected and explained as soon as possible.
2. The Undercoat team will attempt to respond to all non-frivolous queries or complaints about our compliance with the codes.
3. The Undercoat team aims to provide a space to which all contributors feel safe to contribute. If you are offended by something on Undercoat Community feel free to respond. We won’t publish any material that incites hatred.
4. The Undercoat team reserve the right to advertise the work published on Undercoat Community on our social media networks. However, we will not, under any circumstances, re-publish contributed work on any other platform without express permission from the author/artist.
5. The decision of what is published on Undercoat Community remains with the production team and will be made in good faith, without bias. We will not publish overtly violent, discriminatory, hateful, defamatory content or content that encourages people to hurt themselves or is criminal in anyway. If you feel content violates these terms, you can submit your concern with the publishing team for review.
6. The administration team of Undercoat Community and Overcoat Magazine reserves the right to edit all contributions.
7. Any advertisement on will be clearly displayed as an advertisement, separate from any editorial content published. Overcoat magazine will not contain any advertising or will it be affected by any interest other than that of a journalistic focus.

Our expectations of you

1. Undercoat asks that all contributors disclose affiliations that could reasonably be perceived to affect the work you submit.
2. Don’t plagiarise: don’t use the ideas of others without disclosing or referencing where they came from. Don’t copy the work of others and pass them off as your own. If you’ve used online sources for your contributions, include the links so others can follow them up. Any work discovered to be plagiarism will be removed.
3. Robust debate is great, but don’t indulge in personal attacks on other contributors. The Undercoat Community encourages debate, feedback and general communication between users. However, personal attacks will not be tolerated. Any comments deemed by the production team to be disrespectful will be removed. Any user to continue this behaviour will be blocked from further use of


Undercoat Community and Overcoat Magazine are bound by the code of ethics of the Media Alliance union, of which the production team are members. The Alliance code follows. To complain about a breach of the code, contact us and/or the Media Alliance.


Respect for truth and the public’s right to information are fundamental principles of journalism. Journalists describe society to itself. They convey information, ideas and opinions, a privileged role. They search, disclose, record, question, entertain, suggest and remember. They inform citizens and animate democracy. They give a practical form to freedom of expression. Many journalists work in private enterprise, but all have these public responsibilities. They scrutinise power, but also exercise it, and should be accountable. Accountability engenders trust. Without trust, journalists do not fulfil their public responsibilities. MEAA members engaged in journalism commit themselves to

* Respect for the rights of others

1. Report and interpret honestly, striving for accuracy, fairness and disclosure of all essential facts. Do not suppress relevant available facts, or give distorting emphasis. Do your utmost to give a fair opportunity for reply.
2. Do not place unnecessary emphasis on personal characteristics, including race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, age, sexual orientation, family relationships, religious belief, or physical or intellectual disability.
3. Aim to attribute information to its source. Where a source seeks anonymity, do not agree without first considering the sources motives and any alternative attributable source. Where confidences are accepted, respect them in all circumstances.
4. Do not allow personal interest, or any belief, commitment, payment, gift or benefit, to undermine your accuracy, fairness or independence.
5. Disclose conflicts of interest that affect, or could be seen to affect, the accuracy, fairness or independence of your journalism. Do not improperly use a journalistic position for personal gain.
6. Do not allow advertising or other commercial considerations to undermine accuracy, fairness or independence.
7. Do your utmost to ensure disclosure of any direct or indirect payment made for interviews, pictures, information or stories.
8. Use fair, responsible and honest means to obtain material. Identify yourself and your employer before obtaining any interview for publication or broadcast. Never exploit a persons vulnerability or ignorance of media practice.
9. Present pictures and sound which are true and accurate. Any manipulation likely to mislead should be disclosed.
10. Do not plagiarise.
11. Respect private grief and personal privacy. Journalists have the right to resist compulsion to intrude.
12. Do your utmost to achieve fair correction of errors.

Guidance Clause

Basic values often need interpretation and sometimes come into conflict. Ethical journalism requires conscientious decision-making in context. Only substantial advancement of the public interest or risk of substantial harm to people allows any standard to be overridden.

Ownership of copyright

Information published on the Undercoat website, including but not limited to articles, graphical images, interactive applications, artwork, audio clips, and video clips and PDF files (collectively, the “Content”), are protected by copyright and are owned by the author of that particular work. You may not modify the Content or re-publish, re-transmit, or otherwise distribute directly or via links any Content to any third person except for your personal, non-commercial use.
